Gaming & Esports Applied Research (GEAR) at Georgia Tech
The Gaming & Esports Applied Research (GEAR) team at Georgia Tech is a multidisciplinary group of researchers, including computer scientists, engineers, health professionals, and cognitive psychologists. Their work focuses on using video games for education, rehabilitation, community engagement, and health interventions. In esports, GEAR develops technologies for player health and safety, fan engagement, and team coaching while also supporting STEM curricula in schools.
Key projects include:
- BubbleTrip – A game-based alternative to traditional personality testing.
- Food for Thought – A cognitive training game for older adults.
- GT@DragonCon – Public panels on gaming and esports research.
- User Support Technologies – Tools for fan experiences, team management, and esports business strategies.
- STEM Engagement – Esports-based curriculum development.
- Player Health & Support – Research on the physical and mental well-being of esports players.
- VIP Future Experience of Esports – Student-led research on esports technologies, team cohesion, and player wellness in collaboration with industry partners.
GEAR actively collaborates with esports organizations such as Hi-Rez Studios, Atlanta Reign, and Northside Hospital to advance human health and performance in gaming.
