Phill Alexander Remembered as a Pioneer in Collegiate Esports

Phill Alexander MA ’07, a professor at Miami University and a key figure in collegiate esports, passed away at age 47. Alexander played a pivotal role in shaping Miami’s esports program, launching innovative courses like the first documented collegiate class on esports and Esports Broadcasting. His influence extended beyond the university, leading to the creation of the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC), the first collegiate esports conference globally.

Awarded the President’s Medal days before his passing, Alexander was celebrated for his contributions to game studies, digital media, and esports education. His work positioned Miami as a national leader in esports and inspired generations of students. A scholarship in his name, The Professor Phill Alexander Memorial Fund, has been established to support students in Game Studies.
