UH Launches Free Esports Pathway Program for Hawaiʻi Students

The University of Hawaiʻi (UH) is introducing a first-of-its-kind esports pathway program this fall, open to UH students and eligible Hawaiʻi residents through Good Jobs Hawaiʻi. The free program consists of nine credits (SOCs 150, COM 201 in Fall 2024, and SOCs 489 in Summer 2025) and a 150-hour internship in Summer 2025.

This initiative, led by UH Mānoa esports program director Nyle Sky Kauweloa, aims to prepare students for entry-level esports industry roles and is expected to evolve into a certificate program. The program is particularly focused on freshmen and sophomores, especially from community colleges, who have shown interest in esports but face barriers to entry.

Industry partner Vanta Esports will oversee the summer internship, with co-founder Ed Lallier emphasizing its economic impact and potential for high-paying jobs. UH Mānoa’s esports program, recognized as the 2022 National Collegiate Program of the Year, continues to build international opportunities for students.

Interested applicants can apply through Good Jobs Hawaiʻi. A virtual info session is scheduled for July 17 at 4 p.m.
