Wichita State Esports Expands Under New Leadership
Wichita State University (WSU) Esports is entering a new phase of growth under the leadership of Joe Mazzara, who was recently appointed as the program’s director. Having been involved with WSU Esports since 2019, Mazzara aims to make WSU the premier destination for collegiate esports athletes by enhancing player engagement, expanding learning opportunities, and fostering regional esports leadership.
The program has grown to nearly 60 student-athletes, with additional support staff driving its success. Competing primarily in NACE, WSU fields teams in Call of Duty, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Valorant. The Valorant team won the 2023 ECAC Championship, and other teams have secured top-four finishes in multiple national competitions.
Beyond competition, WSU Esports is investing in community engagement. The program has revived the D-Air Capital regional Super Smash Bros. tournament, hosts weekly Shocker Smash Fridays, and collaborates with Visit Wichita to grow the local esports scene. Additionally, high school summer camps, led by Program Manager Avery Pierce, provide young players with hands-on experience in competitive gaming and career pathways in esports.
WSU Esports continues to solidify itself as a regional and national leader, proving that collegiate esports can be both a competitive and educational force.
